A gospel ninja doesn’t look like your typical martial arts guru that comes out of nowhere in a movie. He or she doesn’t hide their identity under a mask (though in 2020 and 2021, perhaps the person does for COVID-19 reasons). They don’t necessarily look like your stereotypical pastor on a Sunday morning.
It can be a pastor, a missionary, or an average, everyday person that wants to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. It can be someone who works at an office, an assembly line, or farms for a living. It can be anyone who wants to use modern communications tools to make a positive difference in this world.
A Gospel Ninja is someone who has learned to use the tools of the Internet and social media effectively to take hope and light to a hopeless, dark world. They could be someone who is on staff at a church. It could be a volunteer that has taken on the role of Facebook Page manager. It may be the person behind a camera or smartphone that is recording the weekend message.
They don’t just send out Bible verses into the Internet, though that may be part of their tactics. They are someone who considers the importance of James 1:19.
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
James 1:19 (NIV)
A gospel ninja looks like someone who has the discipline to think before they speak and are willing to be in dialog with someone who doesn’t agree with you. They don’t get caught up in controversies that have little to do with the gospel. In fact, they aren’t out to make a name for themselves with outlandish theories or the latest click-bait-induced headline.
Instead, a Gospel Ninja’s speech is gracious. It is respectful of another person, regardless of whether they agree with them or not. It could be someone who is or isn’t a Christian. It may be someone who doesn’t agree on a certain theological stance. A Gospel Ninja keeps dialog civil, respectful and gracious.
Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
Colossians 4:6 (KJV)
An effective Gospel Ninja is just as much about good manners as technology or theological knowledge. They are willing to have a conversation, not talk to someone as if they are a wall. It is two-sided communication.
Does it sound good? Then let’s start on this journey together.
